About Vail

Vail is a small, free Ultima Online shard for players who loved Mondain's Legacy-era Britannia and want to see the whole of it, alone or with a friend.

The problem with small shards

Ultima Online was built for thousands of players at once. On a quiet shard, some of the best parts of the game quietly break: content locked behind Felucca, rare recipes and boss materials nobody can get, clothing slots with nothing worth wearing, crafters with no one to supply. Vail keeps the classic rules and fixes those gaps, so every system has a purpose for a solo or duo player.

What we hold to

Classic first

Vail runs Mondain's Legacy rules: the 700 skill cap, 225 stats, normal skill gain, classic items and classic monsters. Nothing from later expansions is mixed in.

Everything reachable

If something can be crafted, its recipe and materials can be found. If a reward exists, a solo player can earn it. Felucca-only content has moved to Trammel with its full rewards.

Boosts, not power creep

Our additions, like exceptional crafting bonuses, boss garments and food buffs, are deliberately small. Artifacts, good loot and great crafting still matter most.

Peaceful by design

Vail is PvE only. There's no player killing and no looting of other players, so you can play at your own pace.

Still under development

Vail is a work in progress, and the goal is simple: every skill has a use. Every skill in the game should be worth the points you put into it, with a real reason to train it and something to show for it. On a busy shard some skills only matter because other players need them; on Vail each one should earn its place on its own.

The game is playable today, and new content and fixes keep arriving. Check the wiki for what's live.

The technical side

Vail runs on ModernUO, the open-source .NET Ultima Online server, with shard-specific changes kept small and documented. Everything we've added or changed is in the wiki.
